Cockroaches — also addressed as "roach" — are approximately 4,600 species amongst the most primitive winged insects. Usually identified by a flat oval body, long antennae and a shiny dark brown leathery body. They prefer warm, humid, dark spaces and are usually found in tropical areas or mild climates. Less than a handful of species have become pests to man, but they damage more material than they consume and discharge a musky odour. Hence the importance of defence against cockroaches.

01
Species Profile
German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)
Size
12–15mm adult body
Diet
Omnivore — food scraps, soap, toothpaste
Habitat
Kitchens, bathrooms, cracks & crevices
Impact
Asthma triggers, food contamination
Defence & Prevention
Seal all cracks and crevices in kitchen cabinets. Fix any leaking pipes or dripping taps. Store food in sealed containers. Avoid leaving dirty dishes overnight.
Solution
Gel baiting, bait stations and residual insecticide treatment by NEA-licensed specialists targeting all lifecycle stages.
DID YOU KNOW?
Cockroaches have been around as long as the time of the dinosaurs. They are among the most ancient insect groups still alive today — proof of their incredible resilience.
02
Species Profile
American Cockroaches (Periplaneta americana)
Size
3.5–4.5cm — largest species
Habitat
Drains, basements, garbage areas
Diet
Omnivore — decaying organic matter
Impact
Food poisoning, diarrhoea, asthma
Defence & Prevention
Cover all drain openings with fine mesh. Repair all plumbing leaks. Seal gaps around pipes and skirting boards.
Solution
Contact Innovative pest control services for a cockroach inspection to rid and prevent cockroach problems permanently.
DID YOU KNOW?
American cockroaches can hold their breath for as long as 40 minutes — which is why flushing them down the drain does not always work.
03
Species Profile
Brown-Banded Cockroaches (Supella longipalpa)
Size
11–14.5mm — similar to German
Habitat
Dry areas: bedroom, living room, cabinets
Appearance
Light brown with two pale bands across the wings
Impact
Bacteria transmission, asthma triggers
They move through dirty areas and spread bacteria and germs around homes and businesses. Adult cockroaches may bite if threatened.
Defence & Prevention
Declutter wardrobes and storage areas. Inspect and clean electronics regularly (they hide in electrical appliances). Reduce indoor temperatures where possible.
Solution
Gel bait + residual treatment in dry areas. Void space treatment for electronics and ceiling spaces.
DID YOU KNOW?
Brown-banded cockroaches can live for up to one week without their head — because they breathe through their body and can survive without their brain for days before dying of dehydration.

Advice on sanitation, exclusion and ongoing monitoring
The three main species in Singapore are: German cockroach (12–15mm, pale brown with two dark stripes, found in kitchens); American cockroach (3.5–4.5cm, reddish-brown, winged, found near drains); and Brown-banded cockroach (11–14mm, light brown with pale bands, found in dry indoor areas like bedrooms and offices).
Cockroaches carry bacteria including salmonella and E. coli that contaminate food and food prep surfaces. Their droppings and shed skin contain allergens that trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions, especially in children and the elderly. In severe infestations, they can physically bite if food residue is on the skin.
A permanently solution requires identifying the species, then deploying a combination of gel baiting (highly effective for German cockroaches), bait stations and residual insecticide. Exclusion work (sealing cracks and gaps) combined with improved sanitation and follow-up monitoring by a NEA-licensed specialist delivers the best long-term outcome.
Yes — cockroaches breathe through spiracles located along their body rather than through their mouth or nose. A headless cockroach can survive for up to a week before dying of dehydration. This extraordinary resilience is one reason why professional pest control is necessary to fully eliminate infestations.
