Defence Against Rodent in Singapore

There are a few type of Rodent in Singapore, many of which a nuisance to homeowners and businesses. The most common species of Rodents in Singapore include Rats, Mice, and Squirrels. Rats are the most prevalent Rodents in Singapore and can be found in both urban and rural areas. They are known for their sharp teeth and long tails, and can cause damage to buildings, contaminate food, and spread diseases.

HouseMice are smaller than Rats but can still cause significant damage. They are agile climbers and can easily access buildings through small gaps and holes. They can chew through wires and cause electrical fires. Rodents may seem harmless but they pose a serious threat to human health and spread diseases.

Rattus Norvegicus (Norway Rat)

They are commonly referred as the street or Norway Rat and known to be of Asian origin. They have arrived in the United States by ships dock. Now, they can be found throughout the whole world except Antarctica. They have very poor vision and colour blind.

Instead, they solely rely on their other senses of hearing, touch, smell and taste. Although not extremely sharp, they are capable of running the distance, climbing great height and swimming. Rattus Norvegicus

Diet :

They eat almost any type of foods but prefer a balanced diet of grains, meat, nuts, and fruits.

Habitat :

Their burrows can be found along building perimeter, underneath piles of garbage, around garden landscape and in open fields. They can be located in basement, behind walls, or within crack close to a water source.

Impact :

They can transmit the following diseases to humans or animals: murine typhus, leptospirosis, trichinosis, salmonellosis (food poisoning), and rat bite fever. They transmit these diseases from their droppings and urine, bites and the fleas and mites in their fur.

Prevention :

  • Maintain a Rat proof structure for storing food in containers with tight fit covers.
  • Seal any opening larger than a quarter inch to rid of potential entry point.
  • Regularly check and repair broken ventilation screens around the premises.
  • They can easily gnaw away plastic, wood and other materials. Metal or aluminium material is recommended for doors and windows frames. And metal sheet and cement are excellent for patching gaps or holes.

Habitat :

They live in colonies and chose to nest in the upper areas of building premises. They can be found underneath, inside and around building structures.

Impact :

They can carry fleas and spread dangerous diseases such as typhus through fleas, infectious jaundice by urine in water or food. Rat-bite fever from bites, trichinosis by under cooked pork and salmonellosis when in contact with their droppings. And they can cause food poisoning by contaminate or preparation food counter surface.

Habitat :

They prefer in urban areas, being close to humankind. In secluded area of a building, cracks in the dirt ground or shallow burrow and they make nests from shred material. House Mouse is one of the most thriving living Rodent species causing House Mice infestation a regular occurrence.
