Ultimate Guidelines to Identifying Types of Rodent in Singapore
June 2, 2023
With dengue cases consistently high in Singapore, finding effective mosquito protection has never been more important. This guide covers the 8 best mosquito repellent active ingredients — from clinically tested DEET to natural plant-based alternatives — so you can choose the right protection for your family, including children and pregnant women.
- ✓DEET remains the gold standard — 20–30% concentration provides 4–8 hours of protection
- ✓Picaridin is the safest choice for children and pregnant women
- ✓Plant-based repellents work — but require much more frequent reapplication
- ✓Repellent plants add a layer of passive protection but cannot replace topical repellents
DEET — The Gold Standard
N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET) has been used since 1946 and remains the most extensively tested mosquito repellent active ingredient in the world. At 20–30% concentration, it provides 4–8 hours of protection against Aedes mosquitoes — the dengue and Zika vectors in Singapore.
DEET works by interfering with the olfactory receptors that mosquitoes use to detect carbon dioxide and lactic acid in human sweat. It does not kill mosquitoes — it makes you invisible to them.
Adults and children over 2 months. Concentration of 10% or less recommended for children under 12.
Avoid contact with eyes and mouth. Do not apply under clothing. Can damage synthetic fabrics and plastics.
Picaridin — Best for Sensitive Skin & Children
Picaridin (also known as icaridin or KBR 3023) was developed in the 1980s as a safer, odourless alternative to DEET. At 20% concentration it offers comparable protection lasting up to 8 hours, without the greasy feel or synthetic fragrance of DEET-based products.
The WHO recommends Picaridin as one of the four most effective mosquito repellents. It is non-irritating to skin and eyes, does not damage fabrics or plastics, and is safe for use by pregnant women and children — making it the top recommendation for families in Singapore.
IR3535 — Gentle and Effective
IR3535 (Insect Repellent 3535) is an amino acid-based repellent developed in Europe in the 1970s. It is biologically derived and has an excellent safety profile, making it particularly suitable for pregnant women and infants from 2 months old.
At 20% concentration, IR3535 provides approximately 4–6 hours of protection against Aedes mosquitoes. It is water-resistant and remains effective in Singapore's humid tropical climate. Look for it in sunscreen-repellent combination products.
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) — Best Natural Option
Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE) — not to be confused with lemon eucalyptus essential oil — is a plant-derived repellent refined from Eucalyptus citriodora. Its active compound, PMD (para-menthane-3,8-diol), is the only plant-based repellent recommended by the US CDC for protection against disease-carrying mosquitoes.
At 30% concentration, OLE provides up to 6 hours of protection and is a strong choice for adults seeking a natural alternative to DEET. It is not recommended for children under 3 years due to insufficient safety data for that age group.

Citronella, Lavender & Essential Oil Repellents
Essential oil-based repellents are popular for their pleasant scents and natural origin. While they do provide a degree of repellency, they are significantly less durable than synthetic alternatives — most require reapplication every 30–60 minutes to maintain effectiveness.
Derived from Cymbopogon nardus, citronella is one of the most widely recognised natural repellents. Products containing 10–15% citronella oil provide around 30–60 minutes of protection. It is safe for adults and children over 6 months.
Lavender oil contains linalool and camphor — compounds with mild repellent properties. It offers short-term protection (20–30 mins) but is popular in combination sprays for its calming scent and skin-soothing properties.
Both clove oil (eugenol) and neem oil show promising mosquito repellent activity in laboratory studies. Neem oil in particular has demonstrated repellency of up to 2 hours against Aedes mosquitoes at higher concentrations.
Best Mosquito Repellent Plants for Singapore
Mosquito repellent plants work passively by releasing volatile compounds that Aedes and other mosquito species find unpleasant. While they cannot replace topical repellents, they provide a natural supplementary layer of protection — and many thrive in Singapore's tropical climate.
The source of citronella oil. Grows vigorously in Singapore and releases repellent compounds when leaves are bruised. Ideal for garden borders, patios, and balconies.
One of the few plants that emits repellent compounds without needing to be crushed. Particularly effective against Aedes mosquitoes and easy to grow in pots on kitchen windowsills.
Rich in camphor and 1,8-cineole, rosemary has demonstrated repellent activity against multiple mosquito species. Can be grown in pots and doubles as a culinary herb.
The menthol content of peppermint makes it highly repellent to mosquitoes. Studies show crushed peppermint leaves applied to skin can repel mosquitoes for up to 45 minutes.
Marigolds produce pyrethrum, a natural insecticide used in many commercial repellents. Their strong scent masks the carbon dioxide and lactic acid signals that attract mosquitoes.
Research at Iowa State University found that nepetalactone — the compound in catnip — is up to 10 times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than DEET in laboratory conditions.
Repellent Comparison: Which Should You Choose?
