How Effective Pest Control Enhances Your Business’s Growth?
September 7, 2019
Mosquitoes in Singapore are not just a nuisance — they are a genuine public health threat. Dengue fever, spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, hospitalises thousands of Singaporeans every year. For property managers, facilities teams and business owners, a proactive mosquito control programme is both a health duty and a regulatory obligation under the NEA Environmental Public Health Act.
- ✓Aedes mosquitoes breed in as little as 1 teaspoon of stagnant water — any receptacle is a risk
- ✓NEA can fine premises up to S$5,000 per mosquito breeding site found during inspection
- ✓Integrated mosquito control combines source reduction, larviciding and adult fogging for lasting results
Aedes aegypti — The Dengue Mosquito
Aedes aegypti is the primary vector for dengue fever, Zika and chikungunya in Singapore. It is identifiable by its distinctive black and white striped markings and prefers to breed indoors — in flower pot saucers, bathroom pails, roof gutters and any container holding even the smallest amount of stagnant water. Unlike many other mosquitoes, it is a daytime biter, most active in the early morning and late afternoon.
For commercial premises, a single Aedes aegypti breeding site discovered by NEA on your property can result in an immediate fine — with repeat offenders facing prosecution under the Environmental Public Health Act.
Aedes albopictus — The Tiger Mosquito
Aedes albopictus, the Asian tiger mosquito, is a secondary dengue vector in Singapore. While less effective than Aedes aegypti at transmitting dengue, it is far more adaptable — breeding outdoors in tree holes, leaf axils, discarded tyres, blocked gutters and any sheltered water-holding container on your premise. It is particularly prevalent in landscaped areas, gardens and construction sites.
The tiger mosquito is a daytime biter and is more aggressive than Aedes aegypti. It is also a carrier of chikungunya and Zika, and can bite multiple hosts during a single feeding — increasing disease transmission risk for outdoor workers and premises users.
Culex mosquitoes — The Night Biter
Culex mosquitoes are Singapore’s most common night-biting species and a vector for Japanese encephalitis. They breed prolifically in heavily polluted or stagnant water — drains, ponds, storm water drains and untreated landscape water features. They are typically brown without the distinctive striping of Aedes species.
For premises with outdoor water features, landscape irrigation pools, fish ponds or poorly maintained drains, Culex populations can build rapidly. Monthly larviciding of standing water and drain treatment is essential for keeping Culex populations under control on your premises.
Professional Mosquito Control Treatment Options
Biological larvicide (Bti — Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) applied to standing water kills mosquito larvae before they emerge as adults. Safe for fish, non-target organisms and humans. Provides 30-day protection. Best for drains, ponds and water features.
Kills adult mosquitoes immediately on contact. Rapid knock-down treatment for high-density infestations or post-dengue cluster response. Penetrates dense vegetation where adult mosquitoes rest. NEA-registered pesticides used by our licensed operators.
Ultra-low volume cold fogging uses smaller droplets that remain airborne longer, reaching mosquitoes in flight. Lower pesticide usage per treatment — more environmentally responsible and suitable for indoor or enclosed outdoor areas where thermal fogging is impractical.
The most important long-term control measure. Our inspectors identify all actual and potential breeding sites on your premise — from roof gutters to drainage systems — and provide a written audit report with elimination recommendations.
